Becoming an angler
Fishing is one of the most profitable “crafts” in the game, when it’s at 100. Getting fishing to 100 (the maximum skill level) is a daunting task indeed, but with the right stuff, you can do it.
Getting started
First, you’ll want to start out by getting a rod and bait. These can be found on the Auction House under Weapons > Ammo & Misc. > Fishing Gear. A great starting combination is a Halcyon Rod and Insect Balls. Then head out to any of these locations to fish for Moat Carp:
- Al Zahbi
- Bastok Markets
- Boyahda Tree
- Davoi
- Dragon’s Aery
- East Sarutabaruta
- Eastern Altepa Desert
- Jugner Forest
- Korroloka Tunnel
- La Theine Plateau
- Misareaux Coast
- Northern San d’Oria
- Port San d’Oria
- Rabao
- Rolanberry Fields
- West Ronfaure
- West Sarutabaruta
- Western Altepa Desert
- Windurst Walls
- Windurst Waters
- Windurst Woods
- Yhoator Jungle
- Yuhtunga Jungle
- Zeruhn Mines
You’ll find that Sarutabaruta, Windurst, and Knightwell Pond in West Ronfaure are the best locations. For further fishing locations and rod/bait combinations, check out these guides.
Becoming a Novice
After becoming a Novice, as with all crafts, you can sign a contract with the guild, and begin attaining points that will allow you to get special items that increase your skill, or otherwise have benefits to the craft. You will be able to turn in a select type of fish each day, each fish is worth a certain amount of points, and you will have a maximum amount of points obtainable. So for one day, lets say the guild point item was Moat Carp, and each moat carp was worth 10 points, and there was a maximum of 100 points for the day. You would need to turn in 10 moat carps in order to reach your daily guild point limit. Each item has its own unique limit.
Above and beyond
If you’ve managed to reach the Novice level without loosing your sanity, you should be able to go all the way to 100. This short guide is simply meant as an introduction to fishing, and further reading it can be done at FFXIClopedia.
